Anyone ever seen a squirrel in New Zealand?

Ok. So I was camping in the Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island and while we were cooking dinner, a squirrel came up looking for food. It jumped around the campsite for a few minutes and then darted off into the forrest. I told a park ranger when we got back to town but he dismissed it and said it was a stoat or a possum and that New Zealand had no squirrels. Well I know what stoats and possums look like and I also know what squirrels look like, and this was definitely a squirrel. I want to know if anyone knows that they are there or if anyone else has seen them.
