Do you think my former boss should have phoned me?

I lost my job of two years a couple of months ago. I was terminated abruptly and without any notice at all. I was called on a Friday afternoon after work and was told the job had ended. I did an excellent job, contributing a lot to my job duties. I thought of ways to save money and streamline things. Whether or not my boss knew this had happend, do you think he should have pulled my phone number from his files the following Monday and called me? He could have said thanks for a job well done. I ended up calling him about three weeks later and asked for a written reference, which he gave to me. He never reached out to me in any way. At the time he gave me the reference, it coincided with his birthday. I sent him a card, as a way of saying thank you for the nice letter. He never called me or emailed me for the card, either. I was brought up by parents who drilled into me that you should always thank someone for a birthday card. Do you think his behavior indicates that, for some reason, he wanted to get rid of me? Please no silly remarks. Thanks.
