What is the symbolic meaning of Alfred Hith's The Birds?

Why does the film end so abruptly? Are the birds linked to the character of Melanie? Is she evil like the woman in the film says? Are birds actually like that or have they ever been? God it must be a good film to have me asking so many questions.
