What causes speakers to pick up radio frequencies?

I don't know exactly how a radio works, but my understanding is that radio stations operate on a high frequency band. If rfi was being picked up directly by the signal cables, it wouldn't be relayed as audible, much less coherent sounds. Am I wrong there?
